Haaksbergen is in the east of the Netherlands, very close to the German border. Its immediate neighbours are the towns of Enschede and Hengelo. Haaksbergen is easy to reach via the A1 (Amsterdam/Apeldoorn/Almelo) motorway, the A15/N18 (Arnhem/Enschede) motorway and the railway stations in Hengelo and Enschede.
The Haaksbergen region slopes from east to west. It is 20 km from the limits of the neighbouring German town to the far west of Haaksbergen, with a difference in elevation of more than 25 metres: on the eastern edge, 35 metres above sea level, on the western, 15 metres.
