Work

Haaksbergen has approximately 1,700 companies offering employment to about 9,735 people (2010). Something like 60% of the available jobs are in the hands of local Haaksbergen people. A great number of inhabitants (approximately 40% of the working population) commute, particularly to jobs with companies in the nearby towns of Hengelo and Enschede.

Industry and the construction and installation companies are the main employers, the retail and wholesale trades coming a creditable second. Service industries, particularly the tourist and recreational sector, are increasing in importance. The opposite is the case in agriculture: here approximately 1,000 people still find work.
